To mark World Diabetes Day, India Vision Institute (IVI) is observing Diabetic Retinopathy Awareness Fortnight from November 14–30. As part of the initiative, IVI will continue to refer suspected diabetic retinopathy (DR) cases detected during its vision screenings to partner hospitals for further examination and appropriate treatment.

The two-week drive will focus on targeted eye screening and counselling at IVI’s state- of-the-art Vision Centres and mobile eye clinics across India.

According to the World Health Organization, over 77 million adults in India live with diabetes. The International Diabetes Federation projects this could rise to around 134 million by 2045. Integrating vision care into routine diabetes screening is vital to prevent avoidable vision loss among millions of people.

IVI CEO Vinod Daniel said, “With India often described as the diabetes capital of the world, we must ensure that every diabetes check is also an opportunity to protect sight. Our drive this month brings eye health into the heart of diabetes care by creating awareness on the risks of vision loss in diabetic patients.”

“Our message is simple: if you live with diabetes, make an annual eye check a non-negotiable part of looking after your health,” he added.

During the Diabetic Retinopathy Awareness Fortnight, IVI teams will distribute information pamphlets to patients and the public, imparting practical steps to protect sight and guidance on when to seek an eye examination.
