Cricketing legend and former India Test captain Kris Srikkanth today launched India Vision Institute’s (IVI) campaign to mark World Sight Day 2025.
The launch, held at Neelankarai, brought the global Love Your Eyes message to life through free vision screenings for commercial drivers and community members. Spectacles were distributed to those needing vision correction, helping promote road safety and enabling drivers and workers to perform their jobs with greater confidence and safety.
Ramachandran P, IVI’s Chair, Advisory Committee, and R Jeyaprakash, Senior Manager, Sales (Retail), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, were present at the launch.
At the event, Srikkanth also announced the start of IVI’s vision screening program for orphaned and homeless schoolchildren across Chennai, covering shelters in Adyar, Royapuram, Tondiarpet and Madhavaram. The campaign began at a government-run shelter in Adyar, where children underwent eye screenings. Those requiring spectacles are being provided free of cost.
Speaking at the launch, Kris Srikkanth said, “Eyesight is precious. I am pleased to support IVI’s initiative to help people see clearly and live better. Regular eye checks can make a world of difference - whether for a child studying in school or a driver keeping our roads safe.”
IVI CEO Vinod Daniel said, “Clear vision empowers both children and adults to reach their full potential. This year’s campaign reflects our belief that eye health is a fundamental enabler - for safety, learning and opportunity. By extending our efforts from highways to classrooms, we are ensuring that both drivers who keep the wheels of our economy moving, and children who represent our future, have the vision they deserve.”
“IVI will vision screen 80,000 commercial vehicle drivers and allied transport workers this financial year. In previous initiatives, screenings have already benefited over 350,000 drivers and staff. We will also reach an additional 150,000 government and tribal school children in the financial year, ensuring that no child is disadvantaged in education or daily life because of poor vision,” added Mr Daniel.
World Sight Day, coordinated globally by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), is the most significant annual advocacy event for eye health. IVI’s campaign forms part of the global Love Your Eyes movement, encouraging everyone to value their vision through regular eye checks and timely care.
