Dr SS Badrinath, Founder and chairman emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya passes away at 83
Remembering the legacy of the Legend Dr SS Badrinath, founder and chairman emeritus of Sankara Nethralaya, who passed away on 21st November, Tuesday, at the age of 83.
Born in a Chennai suburb, Dr Badrinath faced the adversity of losing his parents during his teenage years.He founded the organisation in 1978, after completing his studies and research overseas using his parents' insurance money to pursue a career in medical sciences. His journey in ophthalmology began with internships in New York, paving the way for his future achievements.
Dr SS Badrinath was considered a medical marvel who worked towards a noble cause - helping economically weaker sections of society seek free medical treatment. His organisation Sankara Nethralaya became the centre of charitable medical treatment for hundreds everyday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also condoled Dr SS Badrinath's death, calling him a “visionary” in ophthalmology.
Recognised for his humanitarian efforts, he was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards, among the highest civilian honours in India. His recognition by the Government of India underscores his immense contribution to society and healthcare.
