MET Gala: between black dandyism and glasses — very little — tailored for you. by Angelica Pagnelli

The 2025 Met Gala promised sparks.
And not only for the inevitable toto-look that accompanies the previous days, but for the unprecedented political and social value of the dress code chosen for this edition.
The lucky guests of the exclusive social event organized by Anna Wintour were asked to create looks inspired by black dandyism , the theme of the exhibition curated by Monica Miller Superfine: tailoring black fashion on display at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
The stylists who took turns dressing the stars of the prestigious blue carpet had the task of creating clothes capable of telling the strength of this stylistic current following the fil-rouge of Tailored for you : an invitation to express individuality through tailoring and style, celebrating the beauty of what is unique and unrepeatable.
And those who have known me for a long time know very well how this topic is one of the pillars of my work.
As an eyewear consultant who brought customization to the optical industry long before it was cool , this theme for me was more than a stylistic suggestion: it was a manifesto.
So, needless to say: my expectations for this MET Gala were sky-high. But were they actually met?
A little context on black dandyism
The MET Gala is known for its sibylline dress codes , and this year was no exception.
Even though the evening's central theme was Tailored for You , no fashion history expert expected a parade of looks that exclusively celebrated fine tailoring.
The true meaning of this dress code is hidden in the folds of time, precisely in the post-colonial context of the 18th century United States crossed by the claims of the black community.
It is in fact from this humus that black dandyism blossomed , a stylistic movement that responded to racism with the appropriation by people of colour of those flamboyant and audacious clothes typically worn by the white aristocracy.

Lapels, top hats, tight trousers, monocles, walking sticks and bright colours thus become a way to manifest the intrinsic nobility of being black and to reclaim one's individuality oppressed by centuries of prejudice. | This is a stylistic trend that is anything but nostalgic, as we still see it sported today by artists and personalities of the caliber of Janelle Monáe, Pharrell Williams, Billy Porter, Tyler, The Creator and many others. |
In an America now experiencing a disturbing revival of white supremacy, celebrating black identity through fashion is naturally a political choice as well as an aesthetic one.
And this Met Gala definitely had all the makings of history.
Glasses that shine among basics: the eyewear report card of the MET Gala
Let's say it right away: this year , eyewear has made us yawn more than dream.
Most stars who have worn glasses (and they have been very few) have opted for black acetate frames . Safe choice ? Maybe. In theme? Absolutely not. Basic black is the antithesis of individuality and does not do justice to black dandyism .
But drawing a sober monochromatic veil over this chapter, there were still some eyewear looks that definitely lifted the evening .
Not as many as I would have liked to see, but enough to compile a report card of my top 10 eyewear styles of the evening.

A$AP Rocky

A joy for any eyewear stylist, this match between a black Marmont-style parka, patent leather Loboutin shoes and a pair of spot-on Ray-Bans customized with his AWGE brand signature on the temples.
Some might argue that this is still a classic pair of black Ray-Bans. But no, because the young A$AP Rocky has just been appointed artistic director of the maison .
In short, a well thought out look and perfectly in theme.

Naturally, the creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear is included in this top 10 .
And not only for his decidedly on-point outfit or for his tailor-made blazer with 100,000 pearls, but also for his elegant – yet sober – black Louis Vuitton glasses with gold details.
Could he have dared a little more? Maybe yes.

The undisputed queen of Gen Z, social media star and face of one of Warby Parker's most successful eyewear collections hit the carpet in a pinstripe look by Courrèges.
A choice perfectly in line with her sparkling and irreverent personality, to which she has expertly combined a pair of rimless jeweled glasses that tone down the outfit with a sensual touch.

Here's a look that really understood the assignment.
The singer and actress rose to the top of the MET Gala best -dress list with this trompe l'oeil maxi dress , paired with a derby hat and a striking monocle watch.
Definitely the most successful interpretation of this year's dress code , even in the choice of eyewear .

From the icon of contemporary black dandyism one could expect nothing less than a look inspired by his Afro-descendant roots.
Her outfit is inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, featuring a beautiful symbol of Ghanaian culture, the mythological Sanfoka bird.
And the profound meaning of this symbol, which represents the importance of learning from the past to progress into the future, is also reflected in the glasses: a classic gold metal frame with dark lenses, topped by an architecture reminiscent of a bird's wings .
A decidedly tailored look for him .

A total Prada look for the Puerto Rican prodigy, who paid homage to the history of his homeland with immense creative style.
From the headdress reminiscent of the java , the classic hat of Puerto Rican farmers, to the pin with the Maga flower, symbol of his city, to the gigantic suitcase clutched in his hands.
And the glasses participate in this ensemble with a super thin gold metal frame and oval lenses , perfectly in keeping with the dandy chic theme .
Did Bad Bunny give us one of the best looks of the MET Gala 2025? For me, it's yes.

The top model from Nebraska decided to leave all spectators speechless with his pirate look signed by BOSS by Marco Falcioni.
A wide fedora, a blue cape and a silver eye patch pay homage to the rap scene of his generation and put an interesting twist on the canons of eyewear style .
Who decided that even an eye patch can't be as iconic as a pair of glasses?

Dynasty and Soull Ogun

The sand look of Diynasty Ogun, who founded the jewelry brand L'Enchanteur with her twin, would go completely unnoticed, if it were not for the detail of the statement jacket and glasses by Rigards .
An outfit that is perhaps a little too comfortable , but still better than that of his brother Soull who chose not to choose with his total black look and black acetate frame.

Vera Wang

Is 75 too old to reinvent yourself? Absolutely not, and this extreme makeover MET Gala edition by Vera Wang proves it.
She shocked all her fans with a Y2K outfit complete with mini-bangs, plunging neckline and cloud of grey feathers, decidedly far from the chic style that has always characterised her.
A revolution that perhaps comes in the wrong place, since it doesn't seem to fully grasp the theme of the evening. But we forgive it because its full-shield glasses are sensational.

A look that pays homage to the figure of the black cowboys , forgotten protagonists of the conquest of the Old West between 1860 and 1880.
The tailored suit by Willy Chavarria is decorated with bluebonnet flowers, a symbolic plant of Texas, and expertly complemented by a pair of black-framed glasses with contrasting smoke lenses.
What a great outfit indeed . After all, who would have thought we would meet a cowboy with glasses?

A timid revolution in eyewear
This year's MET Gala could have been an eyewear revolution. It was, in the end, a timid fashion show with little fireworks .
In my work I strive every day to make glasses a tool of expression, not just an accessory to see better. This is why this year's Met Gala touched me closely. And for this reason, perhaps, the disappointment of the blue carpet was more stinging.
But if there is one thing that this event teaches us is that eyewear still has a huge potential to explore in terms of styling . The hope is that more and more stylists , designers and celebrities choose frames that
tell true, original, courageous stories.
What do you think? What was your favorite eyewear look ? Or the one you just couldn't stomach? Tell me in the comments!
