MD. Zakaria Midya famously Known as "That Optometrist" Shares his Vision on the Field of Optometry & The Future Road Ahead For Budding Optometrists

Md. Zakaria Midya, a passionate and dedicated Optometrist, Educator, Analyst, Freelance Researcher, and Social-Entrepreneur, is on a mission to raise awareness about eye health and care. He aims to inspire young Optometrists and future Eye Care Professionals. Currently, he serves as the Head of Education & Professional Services at Yash Optics & Lens, where he conducts diverse induction and orientation sessions on advanced technologies, business methodologies, and core values for Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Opticians, and Key Accounts nationwide.

The Founder & CEO of Optography—an educational initiative dedicated to Optometry and Eye Care he is also contented to lock the crown of the “The Youngest National Head of the Country ever in the Ophthalmic Lenses industry".

In addition, he serves as the Chief Director at the Optometry Research Board of Optography (ORBO) and is the academic founder of "That Optometrist," advocating for modern education systems in Optometry. He is also the Chief Organising Chairperson at West Bengal Progressive Junior Allied Healthcare & Medical Technologist Association.

Md. Zakaria Midya's ultimate vision is to bring happiness and satisfaction to those pursuing a career in Optometry. To support and guide aspiring Optometrists and professionals, he initiated "PassionPreneur," a motivational and career counseling initiative under the banner of "THAT OPTOMETRIST." Q1. The science of helping professionals in their job reach peak levels of performance through the enhancement of visual skills, is becoming more and more important nowadays especially - sports. What is your take on it?

A1. Absolutely, the enhancement of visual skills is playing a crucial role in various professions, especially in sports. Optometrists play a crucial role in the field of sports vision by assessing and enhancing the visual performance of athletes.

The science of optimizing visual performance has gained significant attention by active contributions of Optometrists due to its potential to improve overall performance, reaction times, accuracy, visual skills enhancement, hand-eye-coordination, training techniques, injury prevention, sports-specific-customisation, concussion manage-ment, decision-making and so on.

As the importance of visual skills in various professions, especially sports, becomes more evident, it's likely that we'll see further advancements in techniques, technology, and research to optimize visual performance and help individuals reach their peak levels of achievement.

The role of optometrists in sports vision goes beyond simple eye examinations; it involves understanding the unique visual demands of each sport and tailoring interventions to help athletes achieve their highest potential on the field.

Q2. Can Optometrists Write Prescriptions?

A2. In India, optometrists are trained and skilled professionals who provide primary eye care services, including conducting eye examinations, diagnosing vision problems, and prescribing corrective eyewear or contact lenses and certain medications related to eye health. Out of India, Optometrists are Doctor of Optometry. However, the scope of their prescription-writing abilities may vary based on regulations and the specific training of the optometrist, as well as the state or region within India, under process.

It's important to note that for more complex medical conditions or surgical interventions, optometrists may refer patients to ophthalmologists.

Q3. What would you do if a patient disagreed with your assessment of their vision?

A3. Every patient needs a solution, but only a qualified and certified Optometry professional knows the process and initiatives. If a patient disagrees with my assessment of their vision, I would handle the situation in a professional and respectful manner. Here's how I might approach it : Listening carefully, clarifying the information, reassuring them and also reviewing my findings. If the patient still remains unconvinced, I might suggest seeking a second opinion from another qualified eye care professional.

Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the patient's well-being and satisfaction while maintaining professionalism and open communication.

Q4. What are various advancement opportunities in the field of Optometry?

A4. Optometry is a noble profession, filled with respect, dignity and honor. In the field of Optometry, there are several advancement opportunities, including specialization in areas like pediatric optometry, low vision rehabilitation, contact lenses, Spectacle lenses, Visual Optics, Vision Therapy & so on. You could also pursue further education and research to become a clinical researcher or educator. Additionally, opening your own private practice, working in a hospital setting, or contributing to vision research and technology development are all viable options for career advancement.

Henceforth, in the coming decades, Optometry is going to be one of the most lucrative professions.

Q5. You’re the “Youngest Country Head” in your domain. What do you think are the secrets behind getting to where you’ve got to?

A5. Yes, I’m enjoying this opportunity to serve as the head of education & professional services and learning continually from this industry and its professionals everyday.

Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and improvement through Cultivating a positive attitude and believing in one's own abilities may be the key secret to be “The Youngest Country Head”!

I don’t believe only in talent. I do believe in hard work with the brain. My Flexibility allows me to navigate unexpected changes. Be flexible. Consistency in my actions and efforts help me build momentum and lead to gradual progress.

Q6. In what ways do you give back to your community or industry?

A6. Thanks for this question, it is something so close to my heart. Being a working professional I also try to give back to society through my job responsibilities.

Besides my job we have initiated an educational & awareness platform called OPTOGRAPHY, as an independent, apolitical and non profitable educational resource, dedicated solely for the Optometry fraternity to learn, educate & spread awareness among the masses.

Through connecting the passionate and dedicated dots in the optometry community we’re redefining optometrists, bringing modern education systems and polishing them for the industries.

Like I say, “Let’s be the change!”

Q7. What has been your biggest challenge at work? And how did you overcome it?

A7. I always enjoy my work. I love my job responsibilities. I don’t find anything challenging in that way. Yes definitely, a few things require extra effort, energy and hard work to get the desired results. Meeting with different people from different cultures and thought processes across the country and satisfying them all at once, can be a challenge sometimes but, I’m well adapted now. I do believe challenges can be opportunities for growth and learning.

Q8. How do you build and maintain relationships with clients/ customers/ colleagues?

A8. Building and maintaining relationships with clients, customers, and colleagues requires a combination of communication, empathy, and consistent effort.

I tailor my interactions based on their preferences and needs. Always recognize their individuality and make them feel valued genuinely. Be proactive in addressing issues. There’s no set of rules to be followed. My prescription is personalized.

It takes time and effort. Genuine connections are built on mutual respect, understanding, and shared experiences.

Q9. What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their career or business?

A9. In the coming decade, Optometry is going to be one of the most lucrative career opportunities. Henceforth, starting an optometry career now is an opportunity.

Simply love your job. Whatever you’ll do, please enjoy your activities. Be flexible. Be prepared for challenges. Keep your eyes on the long-term vision, even when facing short-term setbacks.

Remember, every journey is unique. You’re also unique. Don't compare yourself to others. Embrace your strengths and decide accordingly. On road enjoy the process of growth and development.

Q10. How do you update your skills/ knowledge in this area?

A10. Learning is a continuous process and I’ll always be a student and will learn from anyone anywhere and at any time.

Being a Head of Education and Professional Services, I get the opportunity to travel across the country. I meet and learn from the stalwarts of the industries and also conduct training sessions with Ophthalmologists, Optometrists & opticians.

I continually update my skills and knowledge by staying connected to current developments in the field through various methods like Professional journals, research, feedback loop, continual learning, continuing medical education, online resources, collaboration.

Self - Learning fosters independence , critical thinking, and a proactive approach to problem - solving, which are all essential qualities for personal and professional  success.
