How armochromy is born

The theory behind color analysis was born in the early years of ‘ 900, with research by Munsell and Itten, but armochromy as we know it became popular in the ‘ 80s, thanks to the work of Carol Jackson. In its best seller “ Color me beautiful ”, the color consultant American made known to the world a simplified color analysis system inspired by the rhythms of Nature, which translated the combination of temperature and tonal shades of the complexion, hair and eyes, into the four – now famous – seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Since not all people respond to characteristics so specific as to fall perfectly into one of the four categories, the method has evolved over time with the addition of color subgroups, thanks to the contribution of Mary Spillane, who brought the number of seasons from four to twelve, and Ferial Youakim afterwards, who comes to identify sixteen.

The last decisive touch to the evolution of color analysis was given by Lora Alexander who, using the purity of the color ( chroma ) as the meter of value, identified more than twenty subgroups!

One personalized study of armochromy must take into account several aspects:

• The temperature, the main element for identifying one's chromatic season, which establishes whether the person's complexion is cold ( Winter and Summer ) or hot ( Spring and Autumn );

• The value, which considers the brightness based on the amount of black or white and can be light, medium or dark;

• The contrast, which indicates the relationship between the value of hair, eyes and complexion and can be low, medium or high;

• The chrome, given by the purity of the color, by its saturation, which is distinguished in bright or soft.

So how to find the perfect eyewear for every armochromatic season?

Waiting to dedicate an armochromy session calibrated exactly on you, to give general indications, let's be guided by the rule of less is more: let's rely on the four seasons, evaluating the main characteristics of the undertone:

Winter Winter people are characterized by a complexion from cold temperature with medium to dark value, medium to high contrast and bright chrome. The Winter complexion will be light-pink, olive or milky with black eyes, compact brown, blue or emerald green and dark brown, dark-ash or black hair. With such qualities, it is easy to imagine that the styling of Winter glasses should stay on cold colors and aim to enhance the high contrast this season, marrying the bright shades. It is therefore a yes for black, intense purple, electric blue, lime yellow, emerald green or optical white frames. On the other hand, golden frames are not recommended, unless they are balanced by cold lenses that balance the temperature or restore contrast. As for sunglasses, total black is absolutely approved, but also the lenses mirrored in cold colors are not to be underestimated.

Summer  Summer people present a complexion from cold temperature with value, however, from medium to clear, medium to low contrast and soft chrome. The complexion will be diaphanous or light pink with blue, blue gray or sapphire eyes and hair in ash, platinum, beige or cold hazelnut tones. The perfect styling for the frame of glasses for Summer people remains on natural tones of the season to enhance them at best or it can be raised slightly, paying attention to not overdo the contrast. To black frames it is better to prefer soft colors such as lavender, raspberry, bare colors, avio and light blue powder. The frames in satin silver and soft white are approved. Excellent, moreover, are the transparencies for sunglasses, especially if frames on ice tones and slightly flashate lenses are recommended.

Autumn Autumn people are characterised by a complexion from hot temperature with medium to dark value, medium to low contrast and soft chrome. The complexion remains in shades of ivory or golden dark, with the possible presence of ephelides, with brown, hazel, brown-green eyes, green or turquoise and the hair goes from dark brown to coppery, to intense golden. The perfect palette for Autumn eyewear draws from warm earth tones, capable of enhancing the soft and golden shades of this season. The styling will move on colors such as forest green, turquoise, mustard and bronzed shades. Excellent are metals such as satin golden, perhaps enhanced by a salmon lens. For sunglasses, it is preferable to focus on gold metal frames with brown lenses, but all the colors of the earth will be able to enhance the autumn shades.

SPRING Spring people present a complexion from hot temperature, with medium to clear value, medium to low contrast and bright chrome. The complexion will be clear golden, peach or ivory and, like Autumn, could have ephelides. The eye will have the tones of cerulean, warm green and hazelnut and the hair will be golden blond, copper, brown, reddish brown. The perfect glasses for the summer will have frames decided by the color brilliance: yes to apple green, mandarin, tomato red, military green, purple. The metal frames will also shine in shades of golden. Same goes for sunglasses: absolutely approved lenses and frames that recall the yellow of the sun.
