Inspired by the Screen
Do the characters from TV shows and movies affect our sense of fashion? In this article I hope to answer this question in more detail than simply saying “Of course they do!”.
The stories we encounter in TV shows and movies have always found a way into our hearts and minds. We see glimpses of our personalities in the characters we like and notice the little ways in which we believe art imitates our own life.
As the world media evolves through the abundance of streaming services like Netflix and PrimeTV, we find our favorite stories and characters available on demand. We can plug in anytime and lose ourselves in the lives of our favorite fictional characters. And as we do, we start imitating these characters in small ways, hoping to borrow something from the silver screen.
Studies have shown that as audiences we get so involved in these characters' lives that it starts shaping our personality to the extent of talking and dressing like them. We often see people imitating their favorite characters through small acts like buying the same glasses or getting the same haircut. So, let’s look at the beloved characters that have influenced our choices and inspired looks that are trending to this day.
5.JESSICA DAY
A relatively new fan-favorite, American sitcom New Girl first aired in 2011 and Zooey Deschanel as quirky “simply adorkable” schoolteacher Jessica Day along with her three roommates stole hearts instantaneously.
Jess’s weird personality, awkward humor and particular sense of fashion with her love for colour and penchant for vintage inspired cuts make her a surprising style icon.
The fans love her quirks and the style gurus adore her prim and preppy school teacher style. But the one look that everyone wants to copy is her rectangle eyeglasses. Framed by her charming bangs, the glasses sit comfortably around her eyes, giving her a quirky look that only Jessica Day can pull off.
In case you are wondering what brand she is wearing and want to imitate her dorky chic style, Zooey Deschanel is often seen in Oliver Peoples’ Wacks and Gregory Peck's eyeglass frames in the show.
It appears when fiction writers want to give their character a distinct persona through their appearance, they give them a pair of eyeglasses. Spectacles become such an important part of the whole character that we can barely recognize them without them.
I hope this article has inspired you to script your own character and style it in your favourite pair.
